One of Ours: Now in Muxtape form!

I don’t know if you’ve heard of Muxtape? (ed note: Muxtape died. It’s sad and complicated. See here.) It’s a neat internet ap that allows you to make virtual mixtapes. To amuse myself, I’ve made one on the theme of One of Ours. Check it out. These were my reasons.

1. Claude’s thesis, of course, is on Joan of Arc and his time in school is hopeful, joyful jangly time for him

2. …and then his father makes him go back to the ranch.

3. Bored and lonely, he convinces himself he must be in love with Enid.

4. Who ditches him emotionally before she even leaves, really. Thus this song, in reference to this chapter in particular.

5. And so he goes to war, where he is finally feels a part of something…

6. And then dies. But dies pretty much happy, and loving France. So, only Edith Piaf could suit.

You made a mix-tape for a book! That’s an adorably dorky use of Web 2.0 technology!

  2. Diablevert Says:

Thanks, man. I frequently achieve dorky, but I always aim for adorably dorky.

  3. Your muxtape has zero songs in it. I don’t get it is this a joke? You’re still a nerd though.

  4. Diablevert Says:

Hmmm—-When I click the link just now I get a database error. Seems like Muxtape might be down — will check back tomorrow and find out what’s up.

Can I ask which songs you chose (if you don’t remember the whole list, at least a few of them?)? I’m really intrigued by the idea, especially given the reasons you provide.

  6. Diablevert Says:

Oh, man. I shall try. These ones I definitely remember, I’ve edited the post to add iinks:

    1. I believe was “To the Dogs or Whoever,” by Josh Ritter.

    4. “I Wish I Was the Moon Tonight,” Neko Case

    5. Was “The Soldiering Life,” by The Decemberists

    6. “Je Ne Regrette Rien,” of course. Edith Piaf. Though I suppose you could make a strong case for La Vie En Rose as well.

2 and 3 I can’t seem to recall. As my mood strikes me now, for 2 I’d put it “Get Me Away From Here I’m Dying,” by Belle and Sebastian, and maybe for 3. “Melt Your Heart,” Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins. (Couldn’t find that online — link’s to a cover. Quite a decent cover, though.)

An interesting (and broad) selection. I wasn’t familiar with all these. I like the idea, though, of a mixtape version of the novel….maybe I should try that with one of them. :-) And while La Vie En Rose is a fantastic song, I’m sure that Je Ne Regrette Rien is exactly the right song to finish the novel–well chosen!
